Computer 101 Orientation Lecture:
Basic computer tasks
|
By popular request, I have posted some basic information about
accessing your account on the server and performing basic tasks
like getting files and changing your password, written to be
understandable by people who are complete beginners with computers.
Each of these lectures covers a topic that every computer user
should know.
Lesson 1: Basic information
Lesson 2: How to telnet to the server
Lesson 3: How to get files by ftp
Lesson 4: How to block spam and unwanted email
Lesson 5: How to check email aliases
Lesson 6: How to change your password
Lesson 7: How to prevent hacker attacks
Q: WHICH SERVER IS MY PASSWORD ON?
A: The server is the last part of your email address. For instance, if
your email address is "myname@br*i-jhu.org", the server is "br*i-jhu.org"
and your username is "myname". Your email is also on the server named
"br*i-jhu.org".
Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BR*I-JHU.ORG, WWW.BR*I-JHU.ORG, AND
ENGRAM.BR*I-JHU.ORG ?
A. They are all aliases of the same computer. Through the miracle of something
called DNS (which stands for "Domain Name Service"), the same computer can
have several different names.
